12モンキーズを英語字幕で再視聴中。カワウソの瞳くんの旅をじっくり振り返っております。従って以下、ネタバレしかありません。
今回はずっと気になっていたコールたんとラムジーがジョーンズに捕まるまでどんな風に過ごしてきたのかがちょっぴり明かされます。
Cassie: Kill them?
Cole: If that's what it takes, yeah. Look, Cassie, these guys are worth 7 billion.
Cassie: I know how it works now. The math is easy.
Cole: Never said it was easy.
パンデミックを防ぐためにウィルスをばらまいた連中をぶっ殺すというコールたんの決意は固いようですが、人を殺すことがコールたんにとって簡単なことなのかどうかはまだ謎めくところ。
Cole: Look, if you knew what it was like back there, what I've seen, you'd understand.
Cassie: Then tell me. You know all about me Where I'm from. You know where I'm going to die. I don't know anything about you.
Cole: What is there to know?
Cassie: Well well, let's start with where you're from.
Cole: Look, if we stay focused on the mission, none of that's gonna matter. Look, there's nothing to tell.
Cassie: I don't know what it is about you that you don't want me to know.
はじめて見た時、コールたん、どうして頑なに隠すかなぁと不思議だったけど、キャシーに余計な情報を与えてタイムラインがおかしくなる危険を冒すなってジョーンズにかた〜く言われてたんだろうなぁ。
Ramse: We're gonna die.
Cole: You know that? We'll find something. Always do.
Ramse: No. We're in atari.
Cole: Atari? What's that?
Ramse: It's a game called Go. Game I used to play when I was a little kid. It means you're out of moves. Got one move left, whether you like it or not.
Cole: So atari's bad?
Ramse: Stay out of atari, brother.
2032年のコールたんとラムジー兄ちゃん。タイムトラベラーになる11年前の2人。お腹がペコペコですが、ワンコは殺せません。それどころかワンコにも食べ物わけてます。こんな感じでパンデミックで文明社会が崩壊したあとは2人で生きてきたんでしょうか。なんだかんだと心優しい2人のようです。
Ramse:How's Cassie?
Cole: Right before I splintered, she was asking me all kinds of questions where I was born, what my life's like back here, that kind of thing.
Ramse: What did you tell her?
Cole: What is there to tell?
Ramse: Come on. Are you gonna tell her about your best friend? Guy who devours blondes for dinner?
Cole: Elena wasn't blonde.
Ramse: Elena was a whole different thing, man.
Cole: I know. I think you'd like Cassie, though. She reminds me of you always waving her moral compass around.
Ramse: She waving yours?
Cole: No. Thanks for asking.
ラムジーにキャシーとはどうなっているんだときかれるコールたん。その行いが良いことか悪いことか、キャシーに問われるようにラムジーにも問われていたらしいコールたん。
そのあたりはどうやらウエスト7時代に関係ある模様。ウエスト7は相手を殺して、場所や物資を奪うことで悪名高いグループのようなのですが、コールたんとラムジーが彼らと遭遇した時、ラムジーはかかわるのを避けようとしますがお腹のすいたコールたんはウエスト7のリーダー、ディーコンの誘いを受けてしまいます。 コールたんを懐かせるには食べ物で釣るのが一番というのはキャシーが立証済み(おい）。
Deacon: You look tired tired of running, tired of looking over your shoulder. Am I right? Hmm? And it appears we have a couple of openings. You're real survivors. You made it this far. That is good. Don't you want a warm place to sleep tonight full bellies? It sure as hell beats the alternative.
Ramse: I don't think so.
Cole: We're listening. My name's Cole. This is Ramse.
Deacon: I am Deacon.
しかし、ウエスト７を抜けてからかれこれ７、８年はたっているのに、ディーコンはコールたんにこだわっているようです。先鋒でやってきていたマックスもコールたんにこだわっていたし、頬に傷のある男もコールたんにこだわっていたし、リーランドもコールたんにこだわっていたし、ジョーンズもコールたんにこだわっている。コールたん、大忙し！
Ramse: Sorry, buddy. You're on your own from here on out.
Cole: What are you talking about?
Ramse: I'm in atari.
Cole: What? Ramse? Ramse?
ウエスト7から急襲を受け、ラムジーが......。
コールたん、大ショック。
そりゃそうだ。今の今まで苦労を共にしてきたコールたんにとってはラムジーは大切なお兄ちゃん。なによりも大切な家族なんだから。
ディーコン、ゆるさねぇ！💢
と、ラムジーのリベンジに赴こうとするコールたんですが、カタリーナにとめられます。
Cole: Get out of my way.
Jones : Is that really what you want?
Cole: Move!
Jones: You'll never make it! You'll kill one, maybe two, and you'll be dead. And Ramse will have died for nothing.
みんな、マシンを守るために戦って命を落としているわけです。ラムジーも同じ。このままコールたんまで死ねばラムジーの死は無駄になると説得するカタリーナ。なんのためのマシンか。パンデミックを防いで、もっとマシな未来にするためのマシン。パンデミックが起こらなければ、そもそもこの時間軸は存在しなくなるわけですから、ラムジーだってこんな死にかたをしなくてすむはずです。
過去さえ変えられれば、すべて解決！
そう信じるジョーンズはまだいまいち自体を把握しきれていないコールたんを急き立てマシンにのせます。あれほど反対していたキャシーに手伝ってもらいなさいと言い添えて。ジョーンズもコールたんが一人では任務を果たせないことをよくわかっています。
Jones: I can send you back. We still have power. Back to Dr. Railly for good. You will not have my support, but you'll have hers. Come on. You're out of time. Come on! I'm sending you as close as I can to when you left Dr.Railly.
唯一の家族だったラムジーが死んじゃったいま、コールたんが気にかけるのはキャシーのことのみ。キャシーの元に送ってもらえるならコールたんにも文句はありません（おい）。
でもそれだけじゃない信頼関係がいつの間にやらコールたんとジョーンズの間には生まれていたようです。なんだかジョーンズがコールたんを見るまなざしが優しくなっているような気がします。
Jones: Most likely we'll never see each other again. Good-bye, Mr.Cole.
Cole: It's James.
Jones: Katarina.
ファースト・ネームを教えあう二人。これには泣けました。なんだかんだ言ってコールたんはジョーンズ、もといカタリーナのことをすごく信頼していたんだなぁと。心を開いた途端に永遠のお別れとは切なすぎます。
カタリーナもなんだかんだと命がけで任務に挑んでくれたコールたんのことを随分と見直した感じ。ファースト・ネームをいうことでカタリーナもコールたんのことをもうただの道具と見ているわけではないと感じられます。なんだか優しいカタリーナ。お別れ感が増して辛い。
ウエスト7が銃を乱射しながら乱入してくる中、コールたんはスプリントします。ディーコンはコールたんが消える瞬間を目撃するわけですが、どんな思いだったのやら。
Ramse: Robbing sad sacks for dog food?
Cole: We're part of a tribe now, brother.
Ramse: That's what this is? It's a tribe?
Cole: Best we ever had it.
Ramse :You're serious?
2035年、ウエスト７時代のラムジーとコールたん。すっかりウエスト７の流儀にそまりかけているコールたん。ラムジーはそんなコールたんを見るのが辛くてたまらない様子。コールたんがこんなことになったのもディーコンのせいです。ディーコンがラムジーの可愛い弟であるコールたんを冷血な血も涙もない人殺しに変えつつあることがラムジーには我慢なりません。だからラムジーはディーコンにつっかかります。
Ramse: We got everything we need.
Deacon: Let them live, create an enemy.
Ramse: They're weak. They got nothing. We're not creating anything.
Deacon: Yes we are.
二人が言い争うのを心配そうに見ていたコールたん。そのためとどめをまだ刺していなかった相手から反撃をくらい、刺されてしまいます。
コールたんはラムジーが止めるのも聞かず、条件反射的に相手を撃ち殺します。それを見てとても満足そうなディーコンの笑み。ディーコンはコールたんが自分の教えを守ってためらわずに人を殺せるようになったことをとても喜んでいるようです。7年たっても消えない恨みぶりをみると、コールたんに相当目をかけていたのでしょう。
Max: what would you do without me, huh?
Cole: I don't I don't know. I don't know.
Max: Are you okay?
Cole: Yeah, yeah. I don't think it cut too deep. Max: I'm not talking about that. You know, I've been with the 7 for a long time since I was 13. A lot of days like today, and, um that sort of thing, it can get to you after a while. Cole: 13, huh? Isn't that when your dad Max: Yeah. When he was killed. Cole: By scavs. Why'd you join up? You never told me. Max: Because I had no choice. Cole: So what if you did have a choice, then, huh? Where would you be? Max: That depends. Cole: So what if you did have a choice, then, huh? Where would you be?
Max: That depends. Where are you?
完全にディーコンの思考に染まっていたようにみえたコールたんですが、内心ではそんな自分を嫌悪していました。生きて行くためには仕方がないと諦めようとしているコールたん。マックスはそんなコールたんの思いを理解していて、マックスがわかってくれることでコールたんはかろうじて救われているようです。
Deacon: Do you know why I'm here?
Cole: Look, uh Ramse's got his own way of looking at things. I'm sure he wasn't trying to challenge your authority or...
Deacon: Do you like it here?
Cole: What do you want me to do?
Deacon: See, that's what I like about you, Cole. I don't have to sugarcoat things.
You are welcome here. But Ramse has to go.
Cole: You let him live, create an enemy.
Deacon: Now, I could do it. But it would be worse. I would have to... I'd have to make an example out of him...take my time.
Cole: I understand.
Deacon: Men like us understand what the world is now what it takes to survive. And there ain't a lot of us left. But at least you're not alone anymore.
なんとなくディーコンはディーコンでコールたんから信頼を寄せられることで自分の行為を正当化できるような、その信頼が救いになったみたいなところがあったのかもなとちらりと思った瞬間でした。コールたんはコールたんでウエスト７のメンバーになってからラムジーとメンバーの間にたって、かなり大変だったのかもしれないなとも思ったり。ラムジーを守るために、そう思って手を染めた汚れ仕事もあったのかもしれません。
Deacon: Holy shit. Salutations, my friend Cole. Look at you. Years haven't changed you a bit.
Cole: Wait a minute.Wait wait a minute, wait a minute. What what day is it? Is it Wednesday?
Deacon:Damn. How hard did you hit him?
Max: It's Monday.
Deacon: It's good to know the day. It's the first day of the rest of your life. Don't worry. It won't be long.
ポンポンとコールたんの頭を撫でるあたりが、余計に怖いディーコン。この人のコールたんへの恨み生半可じゃなさそうと思うと同時に、やっぱり当時相当コールたんに目をかけていただろうということもヒシヒシと(ある意味、皆んなから可愛がられとるのぉ、コールたん...)。
Ramse: I don't know how much more shit I can take from that guy.
Cole: Trust me. He feels the same.
Ramse: You talked to him already?
Cole: Yeah, I talked to him.
Ramse: Here take it. Hey. Okay. I mean, it's what you came here to do, but I don't I don't even know why we're wasting time. I don't even know who you are, man.
Cole: I'm a survivor, and I'm doing it a hell of a lot better than you or I ever did on our own. Okay, you don't get it, man. Deacon understands what the world is.
Ramse:Deacon? Deacon's a cult. His followers, his followers are murderers.
Cole:You got a short memory, man You and I did plenty before the 7.
Ramse: When we had to.
Cole: It's the same thing.
Ramse: When we had to! Deacon's taking for power. Okay? He's murdering 'cause he likes it. Whatever this world is now it shouldn't be this, man. It shouldn't be this.
ディーコンの命令にしたがってラムジーを殺そうとするコールたん。家族同然だった二人がここまで心が離れたのには、コールたんが相当ディーコンに傾倒したんだろうなという部分が確実にあるわけで。というか、まともに考えたら苦しすぎるからディーコンのように生きたほうがよっぽど楽だと感じていたのかもしれない。人を殺すことに区別なんかつけようがないとコールたんは思って苦しんでいたのかもしれない。
Cole: Man, I got to get out of here tonight.
Ramsie: We go together, man.
Cole: Deacon's gonna try to hunt us down. We should take care of him first.
Ramse: You want to take on the whole crew? That's suicide, man.
でもラムジーとの絆強し！ラムジー兄ちゃん、コールたんの心をつなぎとめることに成功します。コールたん、ラムジーとウエスト7を去ることにしました。そのためにはディーコンを殺さないといけないとコールたんは思っていました。でなければディーコンに殺される。このあたりの考え方はディーコンの教育が行き届いている感じ。ラムジーがどう思っていたかはわかりませんが、コールたんはラムジーを助けたことで死を覚悟していたようです。だからマックスに何も告げずにでていった。この2人とってもいい感じだったのに、ちょっと切ない。そして今回、とっても悲しい再会になってしまいました。
Deacon: How you doing? It's Tuesday, by the way. I know you're having trouble keeping track. This girl has some unresolved issues where you're concerned. You you have been living the good life clean water, lights, chocolates on your pillow. Hmm? Got your own little piece of civilization. So why don't you tell us how to get in the compound? Now, beating on you, that's really that's really just for me. It's very therapeutic. But I am a busy man, so I know, I know. You know this this we picked up from the daughters. This stuff will get you talking. And after, you are going to beg me to beat you again. Have a nice trip, Cole. So long, Cole.
Deacon: Just keep him alive. I'm not through with him yet.
Cole: Max! Max. Max, you have to help me.
Max: Or I need to just leave without another word. You'd understand that, right?
Cole: Yeah.
Max: Deacon's just gonna wear you down. You might as well tell him how to get into that place so he'll kill you faster.
Cole: No, I can't. I can't do that. No, they're they're gonna kill Ramse.
Max: There's nothing you can do. You can't change fate.
Cole: I need to save him.
Cole: Max! I'm sorry! I'm sorry, Max. Please. Please, I'm sorry. Please, help me. Please, Max. Please, help me. Max: Even if I wanted to help you, Cole, how can I possibly do that? Tell me. Cole: You can help me. You can help me, just there's another entrance to the compound. Max: Where? Cole: It's outside of the building. It's a tunnel system. Max: Okay. Cole: Overgrown. You have to go there. You have to warn them. Ask to speak to Ramse. He'll believe you. He'll believe you.
Deacon: See? Was that so hard? Tell the men to get ready.
薬のせいで幻覚に苦しめられたコールたんが、マックスにラムジーに忠告にいってくれと懇願するのが切ないのなんのって。”ラムジーはお前の言葉を信じるから”と繰り返すコールたん。マックスはコールたんのその信頼がとんでもなく辛かったはず。
Max: You know, maybe I just want to kill you myself.
Cole: You gonna?
Max: Maybe because I am West 7.
Cole: No, you're not. You never were. Get me out of here. There's still time.
Max: No, see, I don't owe you a damn thing.
Cole: No, you don't. I left you here. But if I'd taken you with me, I would've made you a target. I never expected us to make it as far as we did.Deacon wanted Ramse dead. He wanted me to do it. Put a bullet in my brother.
Max: Oh, but you didn't.
Cole: No. But I walked up to him, gun in hand, so what does that make me? Max. It doesn't have to be like this.
ラムジーはとっくに赦していてもコールたんは自分がラムジーを本気で殺そうと一瞬でも思ったことを赦せていないようです。ウエスト7の中で生きるということがどういうことか理解しているコールたんはマックスをまったく責めません。そんなコールたんにマックスがほだされないわけがないっていうね。
マックスの協力を得て無事にラムジーを助けることに成功したコールたん。
Cole: Ramse! You all right?
Ramse: Yeah, I'm good.
ラムジーをギュウウウぅっとハグするコールたん。コールたんにとってラムジーがどれだけ大切か再確認。大事なお兄ちゃんを失わずにすんでよかった。
Cole: Maybe things happen the way they do for a reason.
Ramse: If that's true, then why undo it at all?
この先ずっと悩むことになるラムジーからの問いかけ。任務に成功すれば今こうしてラムジーと過ごしている時間も消えてしまうのに。そのあたりのことでコールたんは辛くなったりはしないんだろうか。
Ramse: You guys gonna pick up where you left off? No.
Cole: No, it's not like that.
Ramse : Right, right. Cassie.
Cole: Yeah.
Ramse: Listen, you need help. I want you to talk to her. And I want you to bring up your friend.
Cole: The one who eats blondes for breakfast?
Ramse : Yes, him. Seriously take a shot. Worth the risk.
ラムジーはコールたんが過去で危ない目にあっているかもしれないのに自分が何もできないのはすごくもどかしいだろうし、心配でたまらないんだろうな。でもってキャシーとの仲を応援するのは、7年前、自分のためにコールたんがマックスのことを諦めたことをずっと気にしていたのかもしれない。あとどれだけの時間が残されているかわからないからこそ、ラムジーとしてはコールたんに幸せになるチャンスを逃してほしくないはずだ。
Cassie: Where have you been? I mean, I know where when. What took you so long?
Cole: It's a long story.
Casssie: Okay, well, listen, I have been all over this. And it took me a little bit longer than I would have liked because I did it by myself.
Cole: I know. I know. I keep doing this coming and going. Look, what you said before I left, you're right. You don't know anything about me. I've never really been very good at talking.
Cassie: Cole
Cole : So if you want to know about me, I'll tell you. There's a little town just outside Philadelphia. It's not that far away from here. That's where I was born.
Cassie: Cole I found it. I found it. I found the Night Room.
ラムジーの励ましを得て、キャシーに打ち明ける決心をしたコールたん。その出鼻をあっさり挫くキャシー。いや、まぁ...ねぇ。まずはパンデミックを止めないといけないわけだし、キャシーは一人でがんばって調べてたわけだから。そりゃ早く言いたいわな。しかし、ちょっとコールたんが気の毒というか...。これで任務に成功すれば消滅しちゃうコールたん。キャシーはそのあたりのことどう思っているんだろう。でもまぁ、しょっちゅう目の前から消えられてるから、消えられ慣れてきた(?)のかもしれん。
コールたんの略歴
2032年 ウエスト7入り。
2035年 ウエスト7を抜ける。
2043年 ジョーンズに捕まり、スプリンターになる。
ウエスト7に3年。ウエスト7の目を逃れてのサバイバル生活が8年。パンデミックが2017年頃に起こるわけだから、パンデミックが起こってからウエスト７に入るまでの期間が15年...。どの期間もハードそうだな...。
